The Immigration Act of 1990 established the Diversity Visa (DV) Program, which provides up to 55,000 immigration visas through random selection. The program allows individuals from countries with low immigration rates to the United States to enter for a chance to apply for a U.S. immigration visa.

To apply for this visa, follow the steps on the Diversity Visa Program website. Please also click on the DV Instructions for specific and updated guidance.
Additional Notes for Applicants
All applications must be submitted electronically during the registration period specified in the DV Instructions. Late or paper applications are not accepted. The law permits only one application to be submitted by or on behalf of each person during each registration period. The Department of State uses sophisticated technology to detect multiple entries. If you submit more than one application, you will be disqualified.
Those who receive a Diversity Visa interview must come prepared.
Individuals who miss or reschedule their visa application appointments, or who attend their appointments without all required documents, increase the risk that the visa will not be available or issued. These actions also result in using an appointment slot that could have benefited another qualified selected individual.
Beware of Fraud and Scams
Some websites and emails attempt to mislead customers by impersonating official U.S. government information providers. Read our fraud warning for more information.
Complete your application yourself. The online application is easy and costs only one dollar per applicant.
To Begin Your Diversity Visa Application:
1. Submit an Application. Eligible individuals can submit an application at https://dvprogram.state.gov/ during the registration period specified in October/November each year.
2. Check Your DV Application Status. In early May, applicants can check their DV application status and find out if they have been selected using the “Entry Status Check.” Applicants must have their confirmation number to access information through the “Entry Status Check.” This is the only site where Diversity Visa Program applicants are notified of their selection, provided with instructions on how to proceed with their applications, and informed of the date and time of their immigration visa interview appointment. Please note that the U.S. Department of State is unable to provide results for DV applicants or provide you with your confirmation number.
