Job Responsibilities and Duties
The carpenter will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including:
Planning and Preparation
- Prepare estimates of labour and material costs
- Read blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine work requirements
- Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes using measuring tools
- Prepare tenders and quotations
Construction and Installation
- Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel, and other materials
- Build foundations and install floor beams
- Lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems
- Fit and install windows, doors, stairs, mouldings, and hardware
Management and Supervision
- Schedule and coordinate work on sites
- Survey building locations and levels
- Instruct apprentices
- Supervise other workers
- Estimate costs and materials
Technical Tasks
- Operate CADD and other computer software systems
- Maintain, repair, and renovate residences and wooden structures in mills, mines, hospitals, industrial plants, and other establishments
